Court Initiatives

The Court has a range of programs and initiatives designed for the benefit of clients, stakeholders, staff and the wider community.

  • Less Adversarial trials
The Family Court takes a less adversarial approach to trials. This means that the judge, rather than the parties or their lawyers, decides what information is put before the Court and how the trial is run.

  • Family Violence
Family violence is a serious social issue that affects everyone exposed to it – children, parents and other members of the extended family. The Family Court undertakes a proactive role in developing a wide range of initiatives to assist in the early identification of family violence.

  • Magellan project
Cases that come to the Family Court that involve allegations of sexual abuse and/or serious physical abuse of a child go into the Court’s Magellan program. The Magellan program is specifically designed for cases involving the most vulnerable children. The program aims to deal with these cases as effectively and efficiently as possible.

  • Cultural Diversity
An important milestone for our clients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and for organisations representing the interests of those clients.

  • Mental health and the integrated client service delivery program
Through the integrated client service delivery program, the Courts are able to support people’s mental health and wellbeing by working directly with organisations that provide professional services and by ensuring that staff are trained to communicate more effectively with clients requiring support.

eService
The Family Court provides a range of (online) eServices which have been developed for the convenience of clients dealing with family law matters.
