25 March 2014
On 24 March 2014 the Family Court and Federal Circuit Court were awarded the 2014 Australian Migration and Settlement Award in the area of Diversity and the Law. The award was presented to Chief Justice Diana Bryant AO at a ceremony held at Parliament House in Canberra.
The award recognises the courts’ past, present and ongoing contribution to providing access to justice in the area of diversity and the law. Of particular note was the Family Court’s ground breaking National Cultural Diversity Plan of 2004 which was established by the then Chief Justice, Alastair Nicholson and chaired by former Justice Nahum Mushin. The more recent work on the courts’ Multicultural Plan (2013-15) also received a special mention.
The Migration & Settlement, Law & Justice Award is presented to an organisation or individual who has worked to raise awareness of social and justice systems among new migrants and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
‘I am immensely proud of the achievements of the courts and I am continually inspired by staff’s dedication and progress in advancing many important issues relating to court administration.
